According to the Japanese Legend, a deity disguised as an old man encountered a rabbit (usagi), a monkey, and a fox. The deity asked for food, but only the rabbit had none to offer. In a selfless act, the rabbit jumped into the fire to offer itself as food. Touched by the rabbit’s sacrifice, the deity saved it and placed it on the Moon to honour its kindness.
